Rafter Construction & Roof Framing: Step-by-Step
Naturally, a section on rafter construction and roof framing wouldn't be complete without step-by-step directions showing how to layout, cut, and assemble the three different styles of roofs covered in this roof framing section. By the way, if some of the roof framing terms mentioned are unclear, don't worry. I've got lots rafter construction pictures to help out.
Roof framing takes a certain amount of forethought and finesse. Along the way, I'll show you rafter construction and roof framing methods to help ensure you don’t end up with a wavy roofline. I'll also discuss the relationship between roof pitch and overhang in terms of their affect on the size of fascia and trim boards so you end up with strong roof framing and rafter construction that looks good too.

Comment by: Dave Schimpf 2009-07-26 11:15 | my client wants to get rid of a short, brick knee wall with 4x4 support posts on top of it. the porch ceiling extends 5' from the front house wall and is 16' wide. i'm planning on replacing the 4x4s with 6x6s (trimmed out with 1x8s). she wants a span of 11' 1" between two of the posts. what size header boards (doubled up of course) do i need to support the roof weight? mid missouri area, light snow load, one storey house, no storage above porch, roof supported on one additional side of the porch, asphalt shingles. the original 4x4 posts are about 5' apart at this time, with doubled up 2x4 headers! the new post height would be about 8'. thanks you!
